Beren. First Mortal Hero.

See! Love struck. No likey.
Hop diggity dang, here we go again. I said I would go in chronological order, but now I'm kind of regretting it. Mainly because of Beren. I would much rather skip him, but to do so would be disrespect to what he did. Don't get me wrong, he was a champ, but his story is intertwined in a story of love. For some people that makes it only better. For myself, I don't know why but once love is involved I don't like it near as much... It doesn't make sense... Maybe it's because I feel that when characters do something heroic out of love for their "beloved" they do it only because of their beloved, and placed in a similar situation but with no "beloved" would not have done what they did. But a great many things are done and accomplished in the name of love. It seems with just half a moment of thought that most of the great things that are accomplished in this world could stem from love. Maybe not love of someone, but love of something or love of a group of things or people. Love isn't bad I do things out of love..... I digress. I am writing of Beren the One Handed, first mortal hero of Arda.

Men finally are introduced into the picture of Middle Earth. For awhile it was just elves and Morgoth and his minions. Now three houses of Men came from across the mountains and the elves befriend them. Unfortunately men seem to gain the hatred of Morgoth quite easily and soon enough they are tangled up right with the elves in trying to beat back Morgoth.

Beren was of the House of Beor, which was the first house that made friendship with the elves. The House of Beor was the most loyal to the elves of Middle Earth as they were guided into Beleriand by Finrod Felagund. For this particular fact, it would seem, Morgoth hated the House of Beor. It seems he hated them more than any other house because he tried to, and practically did, wipe the entire house off of Middle Earth. Beren was a part of a group of 12 men from that house that escaped Morgoth's wrath. In his wanderings with this group he chanced upon the sight of the most beautiful elf in all Arda. Luthien was her name. He was enchanted by her and for some reason she by him. They just loved each other soo much! Yay!

Her father, Elf King of Doriath, obviously didn't approve and said the only way Beren could be with Luthien was if he could bring back a Silmaril from Morgoth's crown. (The Silmarils were the whole reason the elves came back to Middle Earth in the first place. It's what they've been trying to do for several hundred years now and nobody has had success.) More or less Luthien's dad says, Heck No!

The rest of the story is what Beren is most famous for. He, with the help of Luthien and a freaking awesome War Hound, go to Angbad and miraculously get the Silmaril from Morgoth's crown. A bunch of other stuff happens between (awesome stuff) and after that (not so awesome) but summarizing the story wont do in this case. It just needs to be read in full.

Beren, a mortal, went and did something not a thousand thousand elves could do and it's quite remarkable. All for love. Sigh.... A lovestruck stud... But a stud none the less.

Ps. Tolkien's books have made a pretty hard core fan base. There are some sweeet blogs out there. Here are links for some of the ones I have read:
